Sampling Ra
Radium has no stable isotopes. It occurs in uranium and thorium ores in trace amounts. Concentrations in uraninite is ~0.7g per ton of ore.

The most possible way of obtaining Radium is from vintage watch hands that used a mixture of the Ra-226 isotope and zinc sulfide for self-luminous paints. Concentration of Radium in the paint was in the range of 25 to 300 microgram per gram of material. The more concentrated preparations (~215 ug of Ra per gram) were used in military devices (aircraft and ship instrument dials).

Obtaining a pure and visible amount of Ra-226 would be dangerous because of high amount of radiation emitted. Stockpiling a larger amount of Ra-226 is also dangerous because it decays into Radon gas (Rn-222).
