    [[In-trouble's alter-ego]] Problem turned out to be a defective GPU. Pulled the card and (after downloading/installlng the necessary Intel drivers) I've got surprisingly acceptable graphics performance just with the CPU's on-board graphics capability. Thanks again for the help and pointers...
