HWInfo USB version detection

Hello

How does HWInfo determine the motherboard / host controller supported USB version?

I am currently troubleshooting a issue with a Elitebook 830 G8 whereby it is stuck in USB 3.1 mode with reference to a Zbook G8.
Both have USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 host controllers with the same driver, but only the Zbook G8 is showing as 3.2 in HWInfo.

Not sure why exactly is that but the whole USB 3.x naming scheme is quite weird.
USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 was initially called USB 3.1 Gen 2. So it might either be incorrect reporting by the controller or a design limitation.

Yes, I am aware that the naming is rather inconsistent.
In my particular case a specific piece of USB 3.2 equipment is not working with the Elitebook, but does with the Zbook despite them having almost identical host controllers.

So is the supported version provided by the controller to HWInfo or from somewhere else?
If so is that at the driver, OS, BIOS level etc?

That version is directly reported by the USB Host Controller.
