Question - Upgrading RAM

Hi community,

i have a problem with reading the HWInfo Log of the Laptop from my brother.
He asked me for upgrading the RAM.

Its an old media Laptop from HP. My brother really wants to try to upgrade it instead of buying a new one (-> waste avoidance)


Under the Topic Motherboard i can read that DDR3-1066 is supported... (see red highlighted)

After having a look into the manual HP says, that is only PC2-6400, 800-MHz, DDR2 supported.
Lower in the report at memory i can read, that an 2x2GB DDR2 are built in...

Now I am a little bit confused...

Can i use DDR3-1066 for upgrading this old Lady (it would be a lot cheaper than buying old DDR2)?

I looked up PC2-6400 and PC3-8500 uses 200 Pins and both supports 1,8V.

so all in all this could mean, that HP only built the Laptop Series with DDR2 because they didn't consider the newer DDR3 at the developing time?

Yes, I think that even though the memory controller is capable of supporting DDR3 too, the mainboard was designed for DDR2 support only. Note that DDR3 modules require different slots, signalling, voltages.
